It is curious to note that most historians of the battle, allowing a rate of sailing of some 3 1/2 knots and the length of the line to be between 9 and 10 miles, think that the Dutch and English fleets took some three hours to pass each other. They forget that, with the fleets sailing in opposite directions, the time should be halved. The relative speed of passing was not 3 1/2 knots but 7.
